Which higurashi is first

Similarly titled Umineko is in the same universe as Higurashi, but unrelated. It is the same sort of story that involves a lot of gore, mystery, and supernatural intrigue, but completely unrelated story-wise. There are some in-universe tie-ins, however. Chronologically, Kokoroiyashi should go before Saikoroshi, since it takes place during the summer break of while Saikoroshi is takes place in August. Truthfully, I am not sure which should be read first. I read Saikoroshi first and so far it doesn't make much of a difference.

Though, that can change with later chapters I am unsure about my own translations, but I'm pretty sure this is an alternate version of what happens after Matsuribayashi-hen -A. Having recently moved to the rural village of Hinamizawa, Keiichi has befriended four girls—Rena, Mion, Satoko, and Rika—and joined their after school club.

Life is initially peaceful until Keiichi learns from a visiting photographer named Tomitake about a murder in Hinamizawa's past. He also learns about a dam construction project proposed by the government five years prior which was met with protest from the villagers until the project was withdrawn. When Keiichi asks Rena and Mion about any incidents relating to the project, they refuse to speak about it, making him suspicious.

Keiichi gets even more suspicious when he finds a newspaper article about the dam project manager being dismembered, and claiming that one of the killers is still at large.

During the annual Watanagashi festival, Keiichi is informed by Tomitake and a mysterious woman, Takano, about "Oyashiro's curse," a series of murders and disappearances that have occurred on the night of the festival for the past four years, all supposedly caused by the curse of Hinamizawa's guardian deity, Oyashiro. At that point, Keiichi realizes that Rena has been eavesdropping on him the whole time.

Growing increasingly paranoid, Keiichi calls in sick for school to avoid his friends and delve deeper into the mysteries of Hinamizawa. That night, Rena and Mion visit Keiichi visit him and give him a box of ohagi as part of a club activity. They also interrogate him about where he went to eat, and menacingly ask what he talked to "the old man" about.

One of the ohagi contains a needle, convincing Keiichi that Rena and Mion are trying to kill him. Returning to school the next day, Keiichi arms himself with Satoshi's baseball bat, which concerns his friends, who reveal that Satoshi had displayed similar paranoid behavior before he disappeared.

Rena pays Keiichi a visit and begins acting strangely once again, prompting Keiichi to succumb to his paranoia and slam the door on her fingers.

Distressed by Keiichi's behavior, Mion attempts to apologize for keeping so many secrets about Hinamizawa from him, but he coldly rebuffs her, saying she is no friend of his. Later, Keiichi finds himself being followed by Rena and demands to know who caused all the murders and disappearances; Rena simply replies that it is all the work of Oyashiro. Escaping from Rena, Keiichi finds himself being chased by a mysterious group of men, who knock him out. When he awakens, he is subdued by Rena and Mion, who attempt to inject him with a syringe.

In self-defense, Keiichi beats Rena and Mion to death with Satoshi's bat and flees. At that point Keiichi, who was sure that Oyashiro was behind him, clawed out his own throat. The next day, Keiichi is found dead and the police also find the bodies of Mion and Rena, and they find out that Keiichi was the one who killed them.

Keiichi's suspicions turned out to be nothing more than paranoid delusions. What had truly triggered his paranoia, however, remains a mystery. Keiichi meets Mion's twin sister, Shion; the two are so identical that Keiichi can hardly tell the difference between them. It is also revealed that Mion has a crush on him. During Rika's ritual performance at the Watanagashi festival, Shion whisks Keiichi away to sneak into the forbidden shrine warehouse, where Tomitake and his friend, Miyo Takano, are waiting.

However, after learning about Tomitake and Takano's deaths, he starts to worry about his and Shion's safety. Keiichi and Shion exchange phone calls where they discuss their possible fates. After inquiry, Keiichi indirectly asks Rika for help, but when she and Satoko disappear, he fears it may be his fault for getting her involved.

Keiichi and Rena suspect that Mion might be related to Rika and Satoko's disappearances, and confront her at her house.

Upon being confronted, Mion admits freely that their suspicions are correct, re-introduces her self as Mion Sonozaki, and simply asks for half an hour alone with Keiichi before she is arrested, and she tells him that she will reveal all of her crimes to him.

She takes him to the underground caverns of the Sonozaki estate where Shion is being held in one of the prison cells. As Keiichi tries to comfort a distraught Shion, Mion knocks him out with a rock from behind. Mion says that the demon inside her has taken over, but Keiichi states that the Mion in his heart will never change. He says that if she must torture him, at least let Shion go, and implores Mion to fight her inner demon. She remarks that both requests are impossible, but she decides to let Keiichi go.

Later Keiichi sees Mion outside and upon reuniting she stabs him. Keiichi's parents leave for Tokyo for a few days. Helped by Satoko and Rika, who make dinner for him, Keiichi learns about Satoshi, Satoko's older brother, and his mysterious disappearance on the night of last year's Watanagashi festival. He decides to act as a surrogate brother to Satoko and investigate Satoshi's disappearance. Satoko is absent from school for a few days.

Keiichi discovers that the cause of her absence is Teppei, her abusive uncle. He left Hinamizawa after his wife was murdered on the night of last year's Watanagashi festival, and has only just returned to town. Keiichi decides to intervene. Keiichi comes to the resolution that he must kill Teppei. He impersonates the police and says that he has Satoko and must speak about what she has done in person at the police station.

Keiichi intercepts him on the way, brutally beating him to death with Satoshi's baseball bat. He buries the body, and on his way back home, Keiichi bumps into a suspicious-acting Takano.

Before entering his house, he wishes that Takano would die. Keiichi's mentality is shaken when his friends tell him that he was actually at the Watanagashi festival with them, and Satoko's uncle is still abusing her, despite Keiichi being sure he is dead. He also learns that Takano went missing the night before after he saw her, and is believed to be Oyashiro's victim. Upon overhearing Irie tell his assistant that Keiichi is delusional, he wishes him dead and flees the clinic.

Keiichi goes over to the Hojo residence to ascertain Teppei's existence and finds Satoko in need of clinical help. Once he and Satoko reach the clinic however, they discover that head doctor Irie has committed suicide. Keiichi becomes increasingly paranoid as he believes that both Takano and Irie died because he wished it. At the Furude Shrine, Keiichi discovers Rika's disemboweled body, and Satoko believes that Keiichi is the culprit and flees, eventually coming to the conclusion that he is possessed by Oyashiro.

After Keiichi fruitlessly tries to convince her otherwise, Satoko forces him off a bridge. Shortly afterward, disaster strikes the village of Hinamizawa, a gas leak killing thousands of residents, though Keiichi survives both his fall becomes the sole survivor of the disaster.

Four years ago, during the dam incident, young police investigator Mamoru Akasaka comes to Hinamizawa to find leads to a child kidnapping. After hearing an enigmatic warning from a younger Rika, Mamoru becomes suspicious of some of the townsfolk. After discovering that their efforts were in vain because the perpetrators' demand was already conceded, he realizes the real meaning behind Rika's words to him.

The events from Watanagashi-hen are retold from another point of view. Shion takes Mion's place in Hinamizawa and is lovestruck by Satoko's older brother, Satoshi, at their first meeting together. However, after discovering the trouble he goes through to protect Satoko, Shion starts to loathe her. Satoshi apologizes to Shion still pretending to be Mion , and asks her to care for Satoko during the Watanagashi festival.

That night, his aunt is murdered; in order to cover for Satoshi, Shion reveals that she is actually Mion's twin sister. After the police question her, she is brought back to the Sonozaki main estate to answer to her grandmother for all the trouble she has caused. One day, at the library, Shion meets Takano, who tells her more about the history of Hinamizawa and its dark past. As the story skips one year to the present day, Keiichi brings back memories of Satoshi to Shion.

Shion believes the Sonozaki family is connected to the acts of "demoning away" people in the village, especially that of Satoshi. She imprisons Mion in the dungeon and unintentionally kills her grandmother. Shion pretends to be Mion the next day and confronts Keiichi about the previous night's encounters, to which Keiichi still denies.

Shion has captured the village head and gets information about the town involving the previous murders and Satoshi. Later, Shion confronts Rika about the murders, leading to a confrontation between the two until Shion injects Rika with a deadly drug that Rika had brought for Shion. In retaliation, Rika commits suicide by stabbing herself repeatedly in the head. Shion then proceeds to invite Satoko to her house.

Afterward, she brutally murders Satoko, who she has been holding captive, only to remember to her horror that Satoshi's last request to her was to keep Satoko safe, thus driving her deeper into madness. When discovered by Rena and Keiichi, Shion lures Keiichi to the dungeon and attempts to torture him, but she hesitates and decides to let him go.

After he is knocked out by using her stunner, she switches clothes with Mion and pushes her down the well, but only after Mion tells her that their grandmother may have approved of Satoshi. After being rescued along with Keiichi because they are unaware she is the culprit , Shion starts to hallucinate. She visits Keiichi and gravely wounds him. Shion hastily returns to her apartment by scaling the side of the building, only to slip and fall to her death.

This, however, makes the ending of Watanagashi-hen ambiguous, since an image of Mion appeared to Keiichi while he was in the hospital, though both Mion and Shion are dead by that point, meaning that ending is a hallucination. However, Keiichi dies a few days later of acute heart failure, possibly caused by the hallucination of Shion attacking him.

Rena meets her father's girlfriend, Rina, who she discovers to be a scam artist working with Teppei. After learning that they plan to rip off her father, Rena forms a deep hatred for them and concocts her revenge. Rena confronts Rina at the dump and reveals that she knows everything about her and Teppei's scam.

Rina tries to kill Rena, who retaliates by slashing her belly with a shard of glass and beating her to death with an old pipe.

While returning home, Rena witnesses Teppei putting his and Rina's plan into motion and, leading him back to the dump, splits his head open with her nata. While disposing of the bodies, she is caught red-handed by her friends who, to her surprise, offer their unwavering support to keep the incident a secret, and even help her bury the bodies. While studying Takano's scrapbooks, Rena discovers that Oyashiro, who is worshiped fiercely by the Three Families that run the village, doesn't actually exist.

She also discovers a historical case of a virus that causes whoever is infected by it to go berserk—the same disease that caused all the murders in the past. As a result, she is being hunted down by those who appear to stop at nothing to keep this conspiracy a secret. After learning that Mion moved the bodies from where they originally hid them, Rena's faith in her friends is shattered as she begins to go insane. Keiichi tries to dissuade Rena, but is confronted by her with his own dark secrets.

After confessing his past sin to his friends, he finds that he can recall events from Onikakushi-hen , particularly his own paranoia and murder of Rena and Mion, even though they have no bearing on the current situation. This, however, strengthens his understanding of Rena's situation and his resolve to prevent such tragedies from occurring again, even going as far as apologizing to the clueless Mion for killing her.

Her madness at its peak, Rena holds her friends and schoolmates hostage and threatens to kill them all with a homemade bomb planted on the roof of the school. Working together with the police and his friends, Keiichi manages to defuse the bomb. On the roof, Keiichi and Rena have a final confrontation, Keiichi armed with Satoshi's bat and Rena with her nata.

During their duel, Rena gradually regains her sanity until she defeats Keiichi, though she is unable to bring herself to kill him. Realizing the error of her ways, Rena reconciles with her friends. Though tragedy has been averted through Rena's atonement, the constant time loops have yet to lift; however, there is now hope for the future. Once there, Keiichi learns the mystery of the strange haunted quarry from Mion and Rika as they debate whether or not to check it out.

Rena, now in her thirties, survived the disaster because she was detained at the police station during the incident. She shares with them the little knowledge she has about Rika's strange behavior, shortly before the supposed "gas leak", and Akasaka recalls his meeting with the young Rika as well. The episode is an direct epilogue of Tsumihoroboshi-hen. Back in June , the club participates in a game of "zombie tag".
